Iron Deficiency & Anemia

What is Iron & its Benefits

In human diet, Iron is vital for maintaining energy levels and good health. Hemoglobin (in your red blood cells) helps supply your body’s cells with oxygen, so when you are low in iron, your body may not be getting the oxygen it needs. The end result is that you may feel tired, sluggish and worn out

 Iron Deficiency

Dietary iron is readily available through many types of food. However, nutritional deficiencies, increased iron needs and poor absorption of dietary iron mean that some people aren’t able to get adequate iron from their diets alone. For these reasons, iron deficiency is the one of the most common nutritional deficiency in the world  leading cause of Anemia.

 Symptoms of Anemia

·         Feeling tired and weak

·         Decreased work and school performance (childerens)

·         Slow cognitive and social development during childhood

·         Difficulty maintaining body temperature

·         Decreased immune function, which increases susceptibility to infection

Iron need during Pregnancy

During Pregnancy there is a need for increased Iron in the body. The amount of blood in your body increases during pregnancy until you have almost 50 percent more blood than usual, so you need more iron to make more hemoglobin.

You need extra iron for your growing baby and placenta, especially in the second and third trimesters. Many women need more because they start their pregnancy with insufficient stores of iron. Iron-deficiency anemia during pregnancy is associated with preterm delivery, low birth weight, and infant mortality.

Who is most at risk?

·         Young children and pregnant women are at higher risk of iron deficiency because of rapid growth and higher iron needs.

·         Adolescent girls and women of childbearing age are at risk due to menstruation.

·          Among children, iron deficiency is seen most often between six months and three years of age due to rapid growth and inadequate intake of dietary iron. Infants and children at highest risk are the following groups:

o    Babies who were born early or small.

o    Babies given cow's milk before age 12 months.

o    Breastfed babies who after age 6 months are not being given plain, iron-fortified cereals or another good source of iron from other foods.

o    Formula-fed babies who do not get iron-fortified formulas.

o    Children who have special health needs, for example, children with chronic infections or restricted diets.

Which Iron supplement is better?

Some forms of iron are better absorbed than others and therefore the dose prescribed depends on the type of iron. In addition, your doctor may recommend that you start with a smaller dose of iron and gradually increase the dose to minimize side effects.

Traditional iron supplement may cause side effects such as GI disturbances, nausea, vomiting, Constipation, metalic taste etc
Haldane Pharma brings a Unique Iron Supplement called FERRILEX which provides highest iron absorption and free from side effects.

Ferrilex Tablets - The Special Iron Supplement

Properties & Actions

·         Ferrlilex tablets contains a unique Iron salt SODIUM FEREDETATE.

·    Sodium feredetate is an innovation in which iron is “insulated” or “sequestered” with the sodium salt of ethylenediamine tetra-acetic acid (EDTA) to form a chelate.  The EDTA has more affinity for the phosphates and phytates in the diet (which are disruptive to iron absorbtion) and form complexes with them to leave Ferrous Iron to be freely available for absorption.

·       Hence relatively more Iron is available for absorption than with a conventional Iron salt such as ferrous sulphate or ferrous fumarate which do not have the advantage of the role of EDTA which has been incorporated with Ferrilex tablets.

·       Moreover, Ferrilex tablets also contain other essential haemopoeitic factors such as Folic acid and Vit B12.

·     Ferrliex  ensures the release of the  ingredients at the proper place for absorption in the body i.e. duodenum, So there will be no or minimal side effects such as GI disturbances, Nausea, Vomiting, Diarrhea, Metalic Taste.
