Iron supplements can help during pregnancy

Daily iron in pregnancy reduces the risk of pre-tem or low weight issues of the baby at birth. Research has shown that supplements help in the baby being born with healthy birth weight thereby reducing the risk of low birthweight. This offers enough evidence that iron supplementation during pregnancy is helpful and is highly recommended if pregnancy blood tests show that the mother is anaemic.

Iron & its importance

Hemoglobin, a protein in the RBCs and responsible for carrying oxygen to the tissues plays a vital role in our well being. When hemoglobin is not present in the required level anemia occurs. Iron is required to make hemoglobin. When the body lacks iron enough hemoglobin is not produced resulting in the body not getting the required oxygen.

Pregnancy requirements

Acute cases of iron deficiency could lead a child to be born prematurely or with a low birth weight. That is why most pregnant women are prescribed iron supplements as part of their prenatal care to prevent this from happening. There are reasons why one would need more iron during pregnancy.

  • Since the amount of blood in the body increases during pregnancy by almost 50 percent more blood than usual one needs extra iron to make more hemoglobin
  • Extra iron is needed for the growing baby and placenta, especially in the second and third trimesters
  • Many women need more iron because they start their pregnancy with insufficient stores of iron

Properties & Actions

  • Ferrlilex tablets contain a unique iron salt SODIUM FEREDETATE
  • Sodium feredetate is an innovation in which iron is “insulated” or “sequestered” with the sodium salt of ethylenediamine tetra-acetic acid (EDTA) to form a chelate. The EDTA has more affinity for the phosphates and phytates in the diet (which are disruptive to iron absorbtion) and form complexes with them to leave Ferrous Iron to be freely available for absorption
  • This ensures more iron is available for absorption than with a conventional Iron salt
  • Moreover, Ferrilex tablets also contain other essential haemopoeitic factors such as Folic acid and Vit B12
  • Ferrliex releases the ingredients in the duodenum ensuring there are no side effects
